The long-term vision of the Hong Kong Government is to develop a territory-wide information system for healthcare professionals in both public and private sectors to enter, store and retrieve patients’ medical records, subject to authorization by the patients, to realize the concept “records follow patients”. The majority of chronic disease prevention and management is related to our health behaviors.  Weight and dietary management, physical activity, smoking cessation, stress management, and self-monitoring of risk factors have all been shown to reduce the onset and impact of chronic diseases.  Yet lack of motivation to manage one’s health is a common issue throughout the world.  Dr. Vic Strecher is offering a workshop on motivation and behavior change strategies for patients.  The workshop will discuss state-of-the-art approaches for identifying and working with a patient’s motivation and self-efficacy (confidence) to change health-related behaviors.  Using established principles from Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dr. Strecher will identify common pitfalls in more traditional health education and advice-giving approaches while building new skills for dealing with ambivalence.  He will focus on self-efficacy and ways to enhance it, as well as specific behavior change strategies shown to work.  Dr. Strecher will also demonstrate eHealth tools for the clinician and patient to facilitate better patient engagement.  The workshop will include lecture and discussion.
